My Review of Saints in the Shadows

Saints in the Shadows-my review

Product DetailsI gave this book four stars. It kept my interest and was an easy read. A book by Alana Cash about a young woman that refuses to admit it by she is physic. Here is the synopsis:

The book is set in New Orleans and Manhattan and it’s about Maud Strand who moved to New York because she’s mourning the loss of the her father in an accident.  Maud has a secret, a secret buried so deep in her psyche that she can’t even remember it, but it’s running her life.  She’s drifting in New York when she meets Lina Strand aka Madame Budska a physicist turned psychic to the elite.  Madame Budska’s clients are a billionaire hedge fund manager, a political kingmaker, a TV celebrity, and a crazy Princeton professor. Is she a “real” psychic or a charlatan?  Actually not, but she’s kind of wonderful.  More like a fairy godmother who nurtures damaged people without judgment.

After a few months acquaintance, Lina asks Maud to take over the Madame Budska business while Lina goes off for what she called “the big reveal.” She trains Maud as a psychic to “listen until you hear”, “look until you see.” It’s the act of listening helps Maud unlock her mind and remember the secret that has kept her adrift in grief.

Beyond revealing secrets and the process of grief, Saints in the Shadows dabbles in provocative subjects such as religion, psychic phenomena, economics, morality, masochism, history, and a bit of romance with an NYPD detective.
You can like Madame Budska (pictured above) on Face book at http://on.fb.me/XI2pTn
about the author: Bio:  Multiple, international  award-winning author and filmmaker, Alana Cash is an adventurer.  She’s played castanets with a gypsy band in war-torn Serbia and slept in a KGB interrogation room in Prague.  She’s been to a bullfight in Mexico, swimming in an underwater tunnel in Texas, and parasailing in Acapulco.  She wore a bulletproof vest on a ride-along in an NYPD patrol car, and she kissed a man on the catwalk of the Norman Bates Psycho house at Universal Studios.

What intrigued me to read the book was this statement by the author trying to see if I would review the book, so I did.
“The book was inspired by a chance meeting (on a plane) between my son and a “psychic” working with a world-renowned television celebrity.  I asked myself:  What would very powerful people ask a psychic?  And I wrote this book.

About me:  I’m a multiple, international award-winning author, teacher, and filmmaker.  I was honored to be part of “A Writer’s Exchange”, the PBS series that was translated into 8 languages and aired for 10 years.  I have been acknowledged for my documentary work, which addresses women in the sciences (physics, chemistry, psychoanalysis). My films have been distributed worldwide and aired on public television in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.”

my review of “Here Lies Love”

Here Lies Love by Dan Thompson-my review

I gave this book four stars for being well written. Dan paints a picture with words of a world where compassion for fellow humans barely exists in a darken world. I could have easily given it five stars but I couldn’t say I loved it because of the horrific things that occur in the story. I will just say, this is the type of book that makes you feel. Dan makes you feel the pain and terror Here Lies Love eBookeveryday life would be like if the world went dark. Through the story there is glimmer of hope for mankind yet Abbey, the main character does not see it. I recommend this book to anyone enjoys reading about a cruel world where there is little hope, few places where there is life. Other places are filled people mainly living to just exist. Abbey has a hard time staying in the present and deciding if life is worth living. She floats between her terrible past and the events that occur daily trying to determine whether to live or die.

HLL Banner When she is sold by her father, Abbey discovers that nightmares can occur when you’re awake. Trapped inside a wooden cage, Abbey is forced to listen to the horrors and atrocities above; time ticking down until it is her turn. But Abbey isn’t prepared to become a victim; she will escape.

Although, what Abbey isn’t prepared for, is how harsh and unfair the world can be. With the sun turning its back on humanity long ago, life gives no opportunity. The only thing Abbey can do is learn to survive. To exist. And that means stealing any opportunity that comes her way. Haunted by the unpleasant memories bestowed upon her only nurtures Abbey’s paranoia, until she realizes that to truly live in the world, she must confront the person who was responsible for her misfortune – her father.

Here Lies Love is a New Adult tale of actuality, of facing up to the fact that love comes in many guises. Can Abbey find the one glimmer of the hope or will she be overcome with the darkness of revenge?

Guest Post- Shirley Harris-Slaughter

Blog Guest Shirley Harris-Slaughter- Author of “Our Lady of Victory”

SHIRLEY HARRIS-SLAUGHTER BLOG TOUR

AUTHOR BIO:

My name is Shirley Harris-Slaughter.  I have been a published author since 2007. I got the urge to write when I realized that no one else was going to save our history. It was up to me. So I wrote Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community.Something that started out as just a timeline of events honoring the pioneers of this West Eight Mile Community, turned into a narrative history. Like most of you I am an Indie author struggling to get recognition in a crowded field. Thank goodness for Rave Reviews Book Club!  It’s all about supporting and helping authors. I joined and participated in the creation of this wonderful outlet for our works.  Rave Reviews is the brainchild of Nonnie Jules, Founder & President. She took the time to read my book and give an honest review.

She does the “President’s Pick” in “Reviews In The News,” a weekly newsletter published on the Rave Reviews website, where my book was recently selected to be profiled. We now have #PUSHTUESDAY, and a new promotion “Who’s On the Shelf” with Nonnie Jules   to recognize our member-author’s works, a mentorship program and so much more.

To date, I can add “Spotlight” Author & “Who’s On the Shelf” to the  list of promotions I have been a part of through Rave Reviews Book Club.

I am also a community activist and from time to time I put my name on petitions to stop something or another, or call my representatives if that’s what it takes to get something done. My latest campaign is about the POTHOLES that are driving us crazy here in Michigan. So I started a petition drive and I NEED 500+ SIGNATURES to make an impact, preferably from the citizens of our great state. If you can’t sign it but know someone here in Michigan, please share this… https://www.credomobilize.com/petitions/infrastructure-that-s-falling-apart-filling-potholed-roads.

Thanks for allowing me to share with you!

Book Blurb:

OUR LADY OF VICTORY – The Saga of an African American Catholic Community is a compilation of memories, records, photos and interviews.  The author recalls growing up in the legacy of Mother Anna Bates.
Follow the tale of the infamous wall…built to separate blacks from white residents and how it almost impeded the development of the area.  It’s the story of a thriving Catholic community in spite of regressive government policies; on the verge of developing strong Catholic roots but doesn’t quite make it.
This is the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community.  Don’t run from the information housed inside the covers of this book because the mere mention of black and white being divided makes you uncomfortable.  Run towards this historical narrative because, whether black or white, yellow or brown, if we don’t know the history, we are surely destined to repeat it!  I dare you to read this book and walk away unmoved!

Summer of 1962- hellion year

Hellion Years post #2

This is my second post covering one summer after my father passed away and my mother worked two jobs.  In rural Arkansas, children over the age of ten were allowed to babysit children younger. Now days they have to go to a child care center but when I was growing up, those were almost non existent (only in large cities). Anyway, we borrowed an old wagon and took it up the hill from our house riding it down. All five of us thought it was a thrill and fun. My younger brother told my mother when she came home what we did and me with my older brother Robert were in trouble for doing so. Mom was quick to use a switch to teach us the error of our ways. Robert and I decided to teach Carl a lesson for telling Mom anything we did during the day and getting us in trouble. Carl had one advantage over Robert and I, he could run faster than us even though we were bigger and stronger, so we devised a plan to capture him. The next day, we borrowed the wagon again. Carl stayed away from us, leery of what we might do, so we all rode down the hill like the day before. Carl didn’t ride the first time but seeing all the fun his sister’s had riding down the hill with Robert and I steering it with ropes, he joined in. Soon, he forgot all about staying apart from us, he even helped push the wagon back up the hill for his fateful trip. Robert and I grabbed him taking him over to the rear wagon wheel and had our sister Mary bring the ropes from the steering. We tied him to the wagon wheel never thinking about what if his hand went under the steel rim, it could be broken or cut off if pinched between a rock and the rim. Once, we had him securely tied, we had Mary move the rock placed in front of the wheel to keep it in place. Normally, we let the wagon start moving by gravity, nice and slow. Sometimes after Robert removed the rock, we would have to start rocking the wagon to get it to move. This time, both Robert and I pushed it with all our might. Moving slow like normal, the wagon would follow the ruts in the road down to the flat area. that was why it had been easy to steer with the ropes. Now, there were no ropes or anyone steering, plus we had it going faster when it hit the ruts. Instead it left the road and headed into an empty field. Empty of houses or trees that was. All awhile Carl was screaming at us promising us payback. Lucky for us and him, it rolled to a stop before hitting any houses or buildings on the other side of the field. Unlucky for Carl, it stopped in the middle of a brier patch (blackberries) with him almost upside down. Robert and I left him there, taking our sisters to the neighbors so we could make the two mile walk into town to get our newspapers to deliver. I think he was still there when Mom came home from her daytime job to make our dinner. We told our sisters we would beat the crap out of them if they untied him. My mother had a just punishment for us when we came home from delivering our papers. read about in my next Hellion Years post #3- follow my blogs at  http://booksbyagmoye.blogspot.com  or at https://lightningbooksbyagmoye.wordpress.com

My Hellion years-revisited, Yikes

My Hellion years! Yikes!

I can’t believe I am actually going to post this, but here goes. My father died when I was eleven and my mother had to work two jobs just to feed us. My father left six children behind so it was quite a chore for my mother. She was forced to take minimum wage jobs, having no working skills and no industry to speak of in town. Being next to the oldest, my brother Robert was one year older with sister, Mary three years behind me, my younger brother, Carl came next. Then my last two sisters, Barbara and Gloria K.  Gloria was just over two when my father died, staying with our grandparents. She didn’t get to share in our misadventures, if you want to call it that. The summer my father died, things went okay, but the following summer was when our horns stuck out (Little Devils). Here is our first adventure: We lived at the bottom of the hill with our Uncle Claude at the top, with a couple of other places between his house and ours. While Mom was at work, she depended upon us to watch over the little ones except for Gloria. We found an old abandoned wooden wagon with steel rimmed wood spokes. It was left over from one of the old timers that no longer used it. The five of us pulled it to the top of the mountain, then Robert and I would allow the three younger ones to hop aboard and we would take them down the mountain as fast as our little legs would carry us. As you can imagine, Robert and I nearly was run over by the wagon when the inertia of coming down the steep hill pushed it. After the first trip, Robert and I removed the wagon tongue and installed ropes to steer it down. We had about five or six rides before Robert and I had to leave, taking the younger ones to a neighbor so we could deliver our afternoon newspapers. Mom came home after her day job and Carl told on us. We were in trouble for using someone else’s property without permission and putting the younger ones in jeopardy. They were enjoying it, so what the heck. The next day, Robert and I decided to punish Carl for being a rat. We had seen in some movie one of the characters tied to a wagon wheel, so we decided to tie him on the wagon wheel and push him off the hill with no one steering it. We tied the ropes thinking it would follow the ruts in the dirt road down to the bottom of the hill. In tomorrow’s post, I will tell you what did happen on my Hellion year’s Post #2

So you ask for a review?

DSCF3877Some Times I get bombarded with requests for reviews and I normally read the book and do a review that I post on my blog “Lightning Chronicles” at Http:booksbyagmoye.blogspot.com then a couple days later on this blogspot especially if I rate it four stars or higher. This summer since I am working outside a lot, I don’t get much chance to read and review, so I am running behind. But there is no excuse for forgetting all about doing a book review or reading it. I found that I had several books in my files that I forgot to review and hope when summer is over, I can get caught up. So if I agreed to review your book several months ago, email me to remind me to do so. I will not get upset if you do.Email me at agmoye.moye406@gmail.com I guess as I get older, things slip my mind easier. The only ones that I make sure I get done are the ones where I am part of a blog tour and have a certain day that I have to post it. I have one coming up on August 24th so I have started reading the book so I can write my review. All others will have to take a back seat until I have done that including the ones that I forgot from last winter and spring. Sorry about that, authors, I will get to reducing my backlog as quickly as I can. Have a great day and Talk Back, I’m listening (at least some of the time! LOL)

My Review of Retribution by Charles R. Stubbs

Retribution by Charles R. Stubbs-my review

I gave this a four and half stars but only four on Amazon since I couldn’t give it a half star. I didn’t quite love it but I liked the story as written by Charles. The only thing that bugged me about the story was that there were gaps (Blank spaces) in the middle of some of the words. I am sure it was caused in the uploading and converting the story into Mobi. Otherwise, the story is a gripping story that will keep you riveted to the book to find out what happens next. Set in the context of how the tabloids rush stories to print without knowing the whole truth just to be the first to print the stories. In their rush to print, countless lies are told that people believe and some end up destroying the lives of those they fabricate the story about. This story is about how a murder sets in motion a series of events that brings back most of the characters in Charles’s “Web of Deceit series”. Here is the link to this book on Amazonhttp://www.amazon.com/Retribution-Travis-WebOfDeceit-mystery-thrillers-ebook/dp/B00EE50W1Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1407251328&sr=1-1&keywords=retribution+by+charles+r.+stubbs
